Getting Aboard the Lift truck
Among the keys to maintaining operator safety is the 3-point dismount. Even though this is usually overlooked, it is a major problem in keeping operator's safe. For instance, a few years ago, at a forklift rally, a participator perfectly executed the course at a forklift rally. At the end of his run, he was so thrilled, that he jumped off of his equipment and totally forgot to make a 3-point dismount. The judges ended up docking marks from his overall score and he didn't win the competition.
The importance of dismounting and mounting forklifts is a really serious thing to be included in training. Moreover, having operators wear their seatbelts can really save their lives in the event of a tip-over. It is necessary to understand that if the center of gravity of a loaded forklift moves outside of the stability triangle then a tip-over situation could happen. Trained drivers rarely ever run into a tip-over situation, although, it is very essential that they are prepared for that possibility in case it happens.
Dismount/Mount
Dismounting and mounting of forklifts is important for ensuring the driver stays safe. This is also essential even on low platform pallet jacks. There are way too many injuries sustained from utilizing these equipment. Some of the serious situations consist of: Driver's catching their loose clothing or coveralls while dismounting and could end up falling and wrenching their back. At times, the operator could break or sprain an ankle when they step off of a lift truck. The driver can break an arm accidentally when slipping and falling off of the pallet jack. The operator can suffer from torn shoulder muscles if they slip on floor debris while they are still hanging onto the handhold using one hand.
So as to keep you safe, having 3 points of contact is vital. Obtaining 3 points can be done with 1 foot and 2 hands or by 2 feet and 1 hand. This stance is exactly like climbing down or up a ladder. Don't forget to face the equipment at all times. Operators normally have a tendency to face away from the machinery or to hop or jump off the machinery and these mistakes really lessen the overall possibility of hurting themselves.
